Abstract

This thesis is was conducted after observation in MA Nahdlatul Ulama Jepara that many students got difficulties to speak English because had less vocabulary then they were shy to practice speak English. The objectives of this study were to get significances of the use information gap technique had significant achievement in teaching speaking and to find out the use of information gap technique is effective to eleventh grade students of MA Nahdlatul Ulama Jepara. To gain the objectives, the writer did a true experimental research by using only posttest control group design. The subjects of this study were the students in class XI A as the experimental group and XI B as the control group of MA Nahdlatul Ulama Jepara. In this study, the researcher conducted the try out test items in the twelve grades before conducting this research. It proved that the instrument was valid and reliable or not. The researcher gave the treatment to experimental group and posttest to both of experimental and control group. There were three treatments that were given by the researcher. They were taught about expressing of satisfaction and dissatisfaction, vocabularies of living room and describing the things of living room by using information gap technique. Then the posttest was conducted after the treatment given. The result of t-test analysis showed that experimental group got better score than control group. It can be seen through average of experimental group was 82.13 meanwhile average of control group was 52.93. Moreover the result of t-test was 8.69and t-table was 2.04. It means that t-test value was higher than t-table (8.69> 2.04). In conclusion, the information gap was the effective technique in teaching speaking. Then the researcher hopes that the other teachers would use the information gap technique in teaching speaking.
