Abstract
The population of this study was all of students from tenth grades until twelfth grades in the academic year of 2019/2020. The population was all students in MA. Matholi’ul Huda Bugel consisting of 739 students. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select one class that consists of 29 students from tenth class, 30 students from eleventh class, and 29 students from twelfth class as the member of sample in this study. The data were gathered by classroom observation, interview with English teacher and the students, and questionnaire from students. The result showed that the students’ difficulties in listening comprehension were pronunciations, the ability of the students to interpret the speakers’ meaning, speed of speech, length of spoken text, and accents. There were two factors that made listening comprehension difficult for students. The internal factors included low intelligence, lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar, lack of skill, lack of concentration, students’ uninterest, and students’ unconfidence. While the external factors that made listening comprehension difficult for students were listening media, physical setting, teacher teaching technique, and lots of subjects that made students fatigue.
By understanding students' difficulties and those factors, teachers can motivate and help students to overcome these problems. By developing the appropriate learning strategies, the students can improve their listening skills.
