Abstract

This study aims to find a significant relationship between students' mastery of the simple past tense and their ability to write recount texts. This research is a correlation study where there are two variables in this study, namely the dependent variable and the independent variable. In this case, the dependent variable is the student's ability to write recount text, while the independent variable is the student's mastery of the simple past tense. The population in this study was all class XI at MA Mathalibul Huda Mlonggo which consisted of 237 students. While the sample was 69 students who were taken using simple random sampling technique. The technique in collecting data is by giving a simple past tense test and a recount text writing test to students. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment to analyze the data. The calculation in analyzing the data uses SPSS 25. The average value of the simple past tense test is 70.43 while the average value of the recount text writing test is 83.67. The final result of data analysis shows the correlation coefficient (rxy) is 0.850 and the value of rtable with a significance level of 5% is 0.237. This means that rxy is more than rtable (0.850 > 0.237). Based on the correlation level table "r" shows that the correlation level is at a high level, namely in the range of 0.800-1.00. In addition, the calculation of KP shows that the mastery of the simple past tense of students has a contribution of 72.25% in determining the ability of students to write recount texts. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted and H0 (zero hypothesis) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between students' mastery of the simple past tense and students' ability to write recount texts in class XI MA Mathalibul Huda Mlonggo in the 2020/2021 academic year. Based on the results of the study, it is important for students to realize that one of the factors that contributes positively to their ability to write recount texts is the mastery of the simple past tense. Therefore, students must improve their ability in mastering simple past tense because it can improve students' ability in writing recount text.
