Abstract

This study discusses the effectiveness of guessing games through maps to improve the speaking skills of class X students at MA Al-Faizin Bangsri Jepara for the 2020/2021 school year. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of using guessing games through maps in improving the speaking skills of the tenth grade students of MA Al-Faizin Bangsri Jepara. This research is a quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control group design. The population of this study was the students of class X MA AlpFaizin Bangsri Jepara totaling 53 students. The sample of this study was class XA as the experimental group consisting of 27 students and XB as the control group consisting of 26 students. Samples were taken using purposive sampling technique. There are two variables in this study, namely Guessing Game through Maps as the independent variable and students' speaking skills as the dependent variable. The instrument of this research is an oral test. The results of the test data showed that there was a significant difference between the two classes, the mean value of the pre-test of the experimental group was 64.15 and the mean value of the pre-test of the control group was 67.38. Meanwhile, the average post-test score in the experimental group was 79.85 and the average post-test score in the control group was 72.15. That is, guessing games through maps are effective for developing students' speaking skills. From the calculation results of independent sample t-test post-test, it was found that the value of ttest> ttable (3,750> 2,000). Because the value of t-count > t-table indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Based on the findings and discussion of this study, the researchers concluded that storytelling through pictures was effective in improving the speaking skills of the tenth grade students of MA Al-Faizin Bangsri.
