Abstract
This thesis is entitled A Pragmatic Analysis Into The Conversation Part Of Pathway To English Textbook For Senior High School Grade X. This research is conducted to reveal cooperative principles and implicatures found in the conversation part of Pathway To English textbook and to compare which one is mostly appeared in the textbook.
The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data because the data was in the form of words, pharase, sentences or utterances. The data were analyzed through some stages; reading a conversation from beginning to the end while understanding the context, identifying implicature and cooperative principles, categorizing the data based on the types of implicature and cooperative principles, and explaining the data based on research problems. The result of research showed that 32 conversational implicature and 56 cooprative principles are found in the utterances in the conversation part of Pathway To English. The frequency of each types of implicature, 11 or 34 % included into generalized conversational implicatures, 15 or 47 % included into particularized conversational implicatures, and 6 or 19 % included into scalar implicature. The frequency of each type of cooperative principles 14 (25%) included maxim of quantity, 16 % for maxim of quality, 13 % for maxim of relation and maxim of manner is 4 %. Besides, flouting maxims are also found in the data. Those are 30 % flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality (2%), flouting maxim of relation (8 %), and flouting maxim of manner (2%). From the finding, it can be concluded that cooperative principles (maxim of quality, quantity, relation, and manner) are mostly found in the conversation of Pathway To English with 56 utterances or 64 %. In this case, cooperative principle is used to regulate how to conduct a proper and effective communication.
