Abstract

This study was conducted to describe Process Types, Participant Functions, and Circumstantial Elements of Transitivity Analysis that characterized in The Stranger book part one by Albert Camus.
This study applied descriptive qualitative method that described texts found in The Stranger book part one. The data were in the form of clauses of English texts. The instruments involved in this study were the researcher and the data sheets as secondary instruments. In collecting the data this study used purposive sample technique to select the data.
The data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The study found that the aspects of systemic functional grammar in The Stranger book part one are Process Types, Participant Functions, and Circumstantial Elements. In Process Types occur 933 times, Participant Functions occurs 1679 times, and Circumstances Elements occurs 341 from the total clauses. The description of transitivity system in The Stranger book part one are Process Types which conclude Mental Process 122 times (13.08%), Material Process 583 times (62.44%), Relational Process 89 times (9.54%), Behavioral Process 23 times (2.47%), Verbal Process 112 times (12.00%), and Existential Process 4 times (0.43%). Participants Functions which conclude Senser 118 times (7.03%), Actor 560 times (33.35%), Sayer 111 times (6.61%), Carrier 83 times (4.94%), Behaver 23 times (1.37%), Token 7 times (0.42%), Phenomenon 100 times (5.96%), Goal 443 times (26.38%), Receiver 59 times (3.51%), Verbiage 55 times (3.28%), Range 27 times (1.61%), Target 2 times (0.12%), Attribute 80 times (4.76%), Value 7 times (0.42%), Existent 4 times (0.24%). Circumstantial Elements which conclude Extent 21 times (6.16%), Location 195 times (57.18%), Manner 25 times (7.33%), Cause 25 times (7.33%), Contingency 20 times (5.87%), Accompaniment 17 times (4.99%), Role 5 times (1.47%), Matter 25 times (7.33%), Angle 8 times (2.35%). The most dominants of Transitivity System in The Stranger Book Part one are Process Types of Material with occurs 583 times (62.49%), Participants Functions of Actor with occurs 560 times (33.35%) and Goal with occurs 443 times (26.38%), and Circumstances Elements of Place – Location with occurs 114 times (33.43%). Based on the analysis, the book has a complete of transitivity system and can be an example of learning in teaching of systemic functional grammar.
