Abstract

Smartphones become one of the latest technology that influence people’s life, especially for students. The researchers noticed that the last several years, most students of SMA Negeri 1 Kembang have been using their smartphones inside and outside the class. From the casual survey, the researcher found out that the students of SMA Negeri 1 Kembang using their smartphones to help them in study such as to find modules or materials online, and so on. Based on this finding, the researcher wants to know the know the student’s perception in term of how they use their smartphones, especially their thought of smartphones as media for learning English. The researcher used the descriptive-qualitative method during the research since the aim of this study is to find out students’ perceptions of the use of smarthphones as media in learning English. Qualitative research is a research procedure that uses descriptive data in the form of written or oral words from people or actors. Based on this findings, it is processing smartphones plays important role on their perception. Thus, the students who have background knowledge of the use of smartphones, they perceive that it can be a media for learning anything and anytime they need. The findings showed that the studnets also have experiences in using smartphones for dictionary, learning vocabulary, listening to audio files, and to do English exercise. It can be concluded that the students are aware with one of the learning, especially English. Furthermore, smartphones also can be a good motivation for students to learn English. The teachers can use it for media in teaching students in a more for fun and efective way too.
