Abstract

The research focused on the pronoun of anaphoric and cataphoric reference in the script of the TEDx Talks video “Educating Different Kinds of Minds” by Temple Grandin. The objectives of this research are to discover the pronouns of anaphoric and cataphoric references and the role of them in the script of the TEDx Talk video. The researcher took the data from the script of the TEDx Talks video “Educating Different Kinds of Minds” by Temple Grandin which has the duration of 17 minutes and 56 seconds. In reviewing the data, the researcher used a pragmatic approach by Yule (1996) which are anaphoric reference and cataphoric reference.
The researcher applied a qualitative approach because this research did not deal with numeric data but descriptive data. In the data collecting technique, the researcher used content analysis which the data is acquired from some documentations. Then, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method as analyzing the data which the researcher searched the data, collected the data, analyzed and classified the data, interpreted it, then drew a conclusion.
The findings of the research showed that the most found is anaphoric references. The second found is cataphoric reference. The last found is zero anaphora. The role of anaphoric and cataphoric references make a cohesive relation since it determines whether a sentence or clause is 'cohere' with each other or not. Anaphoric reference is mostly used by the speaker since the listeners will know what is being referred to immediately. Meanwhile, cataphoric is rarely used by the speaker since the listeners will not immediately know who is being referred by the speaker. The researcher suggests for the next resercher to study more about types of anaphoric references such as lexical noun phrase, noun anaphoric, verb anaphoric.
