Abstract

Language has an important role in communication to convey or express feelings, ideas, and thoughts both orally and in writing. We can find deixis and speech act in the movie. This study aims to determine the types of deixis and speech act used in Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie script and this thesis is to determine the dominant types of deixis and speech act in Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie script

The theory used in this study is theory of Levinson, Austin and Searle. This study use descriptive qualitative method. The researcher collect the data with documentation technique. Data analysis used the theory of Miles and Huberman.

The types of deixis found in the Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie script are person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. person deixis found is 573 words or (66.1 %), which consist of first person used 255 times or (29.4%), second person used 156 times or (18%), and third person used 162 times or (18.7%). The next spatial deixis is used 46 times or (5.3%). The following, temporal deixis is used 38 times or (4.5%) and social deixis used 126 times or (14.5%). The last, discourse deixis is used 83 times or (9.6%). The most dominant type is person deixis 573 words or 66.1%.

The types of speech act found in the Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie script are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. Types of illocutionary act is used 56 utterances or (49.1%), which consist of assertive used 12 utterances or (10.5%), directive used 35 utterances or (21.9%), commissive used 5 utterances or (4.4%), expressive used 9 utterances or (7.9%), and declarative used 5 utterances or (4.4%). The next is locutionary act used 40 utterances or (35.1%). The last, perlocutionary act used 18 utterances or (15.8%). The most dominant type is Illocutionary act 56 utterances or 49.1%.
