Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop English comic strips as supplementary book for teaching reading to seventh grade students at MTs Miftahul Huda Jleper Mijen Demak. The subject of this research is 24 students, English teacher and two validators. The research design of this research is based on this design from Borg and Gall (1983), the steps are : research and information collecting, planning, preliminary form of product development, preliminary field testing, main product revision, main field testing, operational product revision, operational field testing, final product revision, implementation. The data were gathered through tests which were delivered into pretest and posttest. The result of the research showed that comic strips book make a significant difference in teaching reading for students at the seventh grade. The students’ reading skill test result of the seventh grade of MTs Miftahul Huda Jleper Mijen Demak in academic year of 2021/2022 before using comic strips book has the average score (mean) = 68.8. The students’ reading skill test result of the seventh grade of MTs Miftahul Huda Jleper Mijen Demak in the academic year of 2020/2021 after using comic strips book has the mean = 80.8. It indicates that the students’ reading skill in using a comic strips book is better and get raises, because the result of posttest is higher than the result of pretest. Thus, it can be said that comic strips book is effective in improving students’ reading skill at the seventh grade students of MTs Miftahul Huda Jleper Mijen Demak in the academic year of 2021/2022. Based on the calculation of t-value (2.512) is higher than significance 5% of t-table (1.714). It shows that alternative hypothesis of this research is accepted because it has proven that there is a significant difference between the students’ skill of the seventh grade of MTs Miftahul Huda Jleper Mijen Demak in using comic strips book.
