Abstract
Assessing is a competence that should be conducted professionally by the teachers. In assessing speaking, teachers need to organize and conduct assessments that are able to measure their language use ability in speaking through suitable assessment technique. This research was a descriptive qualitative research which conducted at the eleventh grade students of SMK Tsamtorul Huda Kecapi. In this research, the researcher investigated the speaking skill assessment technique. The result of data analysis was from observation and interview result. The research was aimed to know teachers’ assessment on students’ speaking skill at the 11th grades of SMK Tsamrotul Huda Kecapi and to know what aspects of speaking assessment. Based on the data interview and data of observation, assessment speaking skill which held by the teacher was speaking performance. The teacher assessed the students by asking the students to present their assignment in front of the class individually and the teacher called the name randomly. The teacher used analytical scoring in assessing the speaking skill. The aspects of assessment speaking skill itself were about the fluency, grammatical, pronunciation and comprehension. Because the students had different ability so, the teacher emphasized one aspect of fluency. From the result of students’ performance, there were many students still bring their book, but some students closed their book. Even though the students bought their book in presenting, but their English speaking was getting improvement and they felt better in speaking although the students still mixed the language in both English and Bahasa. Therefore, from this research, it can be concluded that the teacher assess the speaking technique by using speaking performance, in which the aspect of speaking performance is emphasized on fluency aspect.
