Abstract

Regarding to the problem statements, the objectives of this research are: 1) To find out the writing descriptive text achievement of eighth grade students who are taught using paper puppet; 2) To find out the writing descriptive text achievement of eighth grade students who are taught without using paper puppet; 3) To find out whether any significant difference of the achievement in writing descriptive text between the students who are taught using paper puppet and those who are taught without using paper puppet. This research was conducted at the eleventh grade of MTs. Mamba’ul Ulum Mambak Pakis Aji in academic year 2017/2018. Based on the case, the writer used the sampling technique in taking the sample. The total sample was 60 students where 30 students were for experimental group and 30 students were as the control group. In this research, the writer used Quasi- experimental design: two-groups, pre-test and post-test design. Pre-test was used to know the basic students’ ability. Meanwhile, post-test was used to know the students’ writing ability after giving treatment (taught using Paper Puppet media).
From the data analysis, the writer obtained the mean score of pre-test, and post-test of experimental group (the students was taught paper puppet) and control group (the students was taught without using paper puppet). The result were:1) The mean score of pre-test for control group was 67.16, and the mean score of post-test for control group was 73.66; 2) the result score of pre-test for experimental group was 67.42, and the mean score of post-test for experimental group was 83.5. The enhancement of experimental group was higher than control group. It was 16.08 (83.5-67.42). The enhancement of the mean score of control group was only 4.5 (73.66-69.16); 3) There was significance difference between students’ writing ability taught without and taught by using paper puppet. It was proved based on t-test. The result of t-test was 8.812, while the value of t-table was 1.671. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (8.812 >1.761). The writer concluded that Paper Puppet is an effective media to teach writing descriptive text. The media is unique for the students and it can encourage the students in study English.
