Abstract

This thesis is entitled ”The Effectiveness of Picture Series as Media in Teaching Reading Comprehension for Narrative Text (An Experimental Study at the Eleventh Year Students of Science Immersion Class in MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri in the Academic Year 2017-2018)”. This research is aimed at finding any significant difference between before and after the subjects being taught by using Picture Series as media in teaching reading comprehension for Narrative text. The researcher used quantitative method during the research since the aims of this study are: (i) to find out the English reading comprehension achievement of the eleventh year students of Immersion Class of MA Hasyim asy’ari Bangsri before they have been taught by using picture series as media of teaching and learning; (ii) to find out the English reading achievement comprehension of the eleventh year students of Immersion Class of MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri after they have been taught by using picture series as media of teaching and learning; (iii) to find out whether it is effective or not to use picture series as media in teaching reading comprehension for Narrative text in the eleventh year students of Immersion Class of MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri. The research was done at the eleventh year students of MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri Jepara in the academic year of 2017-2018. The design of this research is quasi-experimental research by using test instrument. It uses the research subjects of the whole students in the Science Immersion class, which accounts twenty-nine students, because the researcher uses intact group. All of the students were given pre-test, the test which was given before using Picture Series, and after they got the treatment the researcher continued giving the post-test. The result of this research indicates that using Picture Series is more effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement than without using Picture Series. It can be seen from the pre-test result, the average (mean) = 12,05; the median = 12,06; the modus = 15,04; and the deviation standard = 2,872. Meanwhile on the post-test result the average (mean) = 16,58; the median = 16,78; the modus = 17; and the deviation standard 1,784. The hypothesis confirmed in the level of significance 0,05 (5%) = 2,048; and the degree of freedom (N-1) = 29 – 1 = 28 shows that there is an increasing at the Eleventh Year Students of Science Immersion Class in MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri Jepara in the academic year 2017-2018 after they got the teaching reading comprehension for Narrative text by using Picture Series as media. The result of to (3,484) is higher than t-table (2,048). Therefore it can be said that the null hypothesis is rejected, while the hypothesis of the research is confirmed. Based on the result of the research above, it is expected to the English teachers that they should consider about using Picture Series as media in teaching reading comprehension in the teaching and learning process to improve the students reading skill.
