Abstract

The aim ofthis research is to find out whether teaching simple past tense by using Teams Games Tournaent technique is effective or not for junior high school students. In the working hypothesis (Ha), “There is significant difference of students’ simple past tense achievment between students who were taught by Teams Games Tournament technique and students’ who were taught without Teams Games Tournament technique.” Meanwhile, in the null hypothesis (H0), “There is no significant difference in the students’ achievment between students who were taught by Teams Games Tournament technique and students’ who were taught without Teams Games Tournament technique.”
The subject of this study was the eighth grade studnets of SMPN 1 Batealit Jepara in the academic year 2018/2019. The number of the subject was 62 students. The design in this research was a quasi-esperimental research. The data were gained by administrating pre-test and post-test in writing test in the form of multiple choice. By using simple random sampling, students of VIII C were taken as the samples of the experimental grup and the samples of control group was VIII B.
In the pre-test, the mean score of experimental group was 36,77 and the mean score of control group was 37,81. After the treatment, the result of post-test of the mean score of experimental group was 74,83 and the mean score of control group was 62,71.
The result of data analysis used t-test formula. From the post-test score of experimental and control, the t-value was 5,679 and the t-table of 0,05 as the significant level was 2,000 with the degree of freedom (df) 60. Then it can be stated that t-value > t-table. So the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be conclude that there was an effective of Teams Games Tournament to improve students’mastery of simple past tense in junior high level especially in SMPN 1 Batealit Jepara.
