Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the use of peer tutoring method in enhancing the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text for tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Kembang in the academic year of 2018/2019. The purpose of this study also to help the English teachers more creative in teaching reading especially on reading comprehension. This research was quasi experimental design exactly a non-equivalent control group design. In this study, the researcher divided the subject of the study into two groups, an experimental group and a control group. Before and after the experiment, both of groups were given pre-test and post-test. In the experimental class, the researcher applied Peer Tutoring Method and in controlled class, the researcher applied conventional teaching strategy. The population of this research was the tenth grades students of SMA N 1 Kembang which consisted of 224 students. The samples of the research consisted of 70 students which were taken by using purposive sampling, X IPA 1 consisted of 35 students as experimental class and X IPA 2 consisted of 35 students as controlled class. There were two variables in this research was Peer Tutoring Method as the independent variable and students’ reading comprehension as the dependent variable. The instrument of this research was reading comprehension test. In reading test, the result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between students’ post-test in both experimental and controlled class. In experimental class, the mean score of pre test was 65, 31 and the post test was 85,25. It was greater than the total mean score in controlled class was 75,3. From the t-test, the researcher found that the value the t-test in the post test was greater than the t-table (6,117 > 2.000). Based on the findings and the discussion of the research, the writer concluded that the use of Peer Tutoring Method was effective to enhance the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kembang.
