Abstract

Teaching reading skills must be structured so that students can understand the text. A teacher must choose the appropriate method to make students more easily understand the material and not make students feel bored in the learning process. Basically, fun learning conditionswill make creative students. One of many interesting method is STAD method. It is a model of cooperative learning that can encouurage students’ motivation to improve their reading’ comprehension. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) to improve students’ reading comprehension of the 8th grade students at SMPN 2 Batealit. This research was quasi-experimental research and conducted in two classes. The experimental group was taught by using Students Team Achievement Division (STAD) method, and the control group was taught by using lecturing method.The population in this study was Eighth-grade students of SMPN 2 Batealit which consist of 50 students. The researcher used nonequivalent control group design, it meant the researcher used both of class to be a sample. VIII A as an experimental group and VIII B as a control group.In this study, the researcher used the test as an instrument, and the type of the test was multiple choice.This research was conducted by following procedur: giving pre-test, applying treatment, and giving post-test. Then, the result of the test was analysed by using SPSS. The t-value of pre test in experimental and control group was -2,816 with the degree of freedom 48 in the level significance (α) of 0,05, ttable was 2,021 and the t-value of post test in experimental and control group was 5,977 with the degree of freedom 48 in the level significance (α) of 0,05, ttable was 2,000.So, the Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It can be concluded that there is significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. In the other word, STAD method is effective to improve students reading comprehension at eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Batealit.It is become important for the teacher to increase and to develop their ability in teaching. The teacher should be able to use appropriate method in teaching English especially in learning reading to make the students more interested and more motivated.
