Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Use of Know-Want-Learned (KWL) Strategy to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension (A True Experimental Research of the Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tahunan in the Academic Year of 2018/2019). This study was aimed to examine the use of Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy in improving reading comprehension. The research method that is used in this study was pretest – posttest control group design where it includes in true experimental research design. There were two groups of class, experimental class and control class. In the experimental class, the writer applied Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy and in the control class, the writer applied communicative method. The sample of this study was taken two classes which were divided into two groups, those were XI MIPA 2 as the experimental group and XI MIPA 3 as the control group with 33 students of each class. The writer took those sample by using simple random sampling technique. The instrument of this study was reading test in the form of multiple choice. In reading test, the result of the data indicated that there was significant difference between students’ post-test in both experimental and control class. In the experimental group, the mean score of post-test was 76, 242 was higher than the mean score in control class was 62, 545. From the t-test, the writer found that the value of t-test in post-test was higher than t-table (8,447 > 2,000). Therefore, based on the research findings and discussion, it could be concluded that the use of Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tahunan in the academic year of 2018/2019.
