Abstract
This final project is entitled The Effectiveness of GIST( Interaction between Schemata and Text) Strategy to Improve Students Reading Comprehension in Descriptive Text” (A Quasi Experimental Study of Seventh Grade Students of SMP TAQ Sadamiyyah Guyangan in the Academic Year of 2019/2020). The objective of this study is to find out whether there is any significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension who taught by using GIST strategy and students who are taught without using GIST strategy. This research was held in July 2019 at SMP TAQ Sadamiyyah. This study is a quasi experimental research, in experimental class (VII-A) and control class (VII-B). The researcher used pre-test and post-test to measure the students’ achievement. The researcher used Purposive Sampling to take the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement between experimental and control class. The average of the students’ pre-test was 67,6 in experimental class and 58,6 in control class. After getting treatment using GIST strategy, the average score of post-test in experimental was higher than control class, 73,9 for experimental class and 64,5 for control class. To measure the significant achievement of the students, the writer also used t-test formula. The result of post test in experimental and control group showed that the t-value was 4,527 while the t-table of 0,05 as the significance level was 2,000 with 62 the degree of freedom (df). It could be described that the t-value (4,527) > t-table (2,000). Based on the result above, it could be concluded that the GIST strategy was effective in improving the students’ reading comprehension at the seventh grade students of SMP TAQ Sadamiyyah Guyangan Bangsri in the academic year of 2019/2020.
