Abstract
Reading is one of difficult activities for some students because it involves some abilities to decode a text and analyzes its meaning. Most of students still do not understand the meaning of the vocabulary. Therefore, they usually fail to do test and interpret contain of text. Collaborative learning is believed to be one of technique to improve students’ English skill.
The objective of the study is to elaborate the effect of using collaborative learning technique to improve the students’ reading skill at eleventh Grade of SMKN 1 Batealit in the Academic Year of 2019/2020.
In this research, the writer used true experiment research. There are three parts during the experiment before the experiment was conducted to both experimental and control class. The students were given a pretest. After that, they were given treatments. At the last, they were given a post-test.
The finding of this research that is collaborative learning technique has significant effect to improve students’ reading skill. Based on the research result, in experimental class, the highest post-test score is 68 while the lowest post-test score is 20. Besides, in the control class, the highest score is 56 while the lowest post-test score is 8. In addition, in the experimental class, the average score is 36,18 and the median is 36. On other hand, in the control class is 28,55 and the median is 24. From the result of t-test of post-test score, T-observe was 2,106. The df was 42, in the table t-test was 2,018. So, from this calculation showed that t-observe > t-table (2,106 > 2,018). It means that the result significant difference between experimental class and control class in the post-test score.
Finally, this finding of this research can be useful information or it can be used as basic information and reference for further researchers who are interested in conducting similar studies.
