Abstract

This research was about the effectiveness of story completion to improve students’ speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMK N 3 Jepara in academic year of 2020/2021. The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of the use story completion to improve students’ speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMK N 3 Jepara. This research was a true-experimental research. The sample of this research was XI OTKP 1 as the experiment class and XI OTKP 2 as the control class consisted of 32 students. The sample was taken by using simple random sampling. There were two variables in this research, they were story completion as the independent variable and students’ speaking skills as the dependent variable. The instrument of this research was spoken test. The result of the test’s data indicated that there was a significant difference between both classes. The result indicated that the students who are in experimental class taught by using story completion and the students who are in control class taught by using discovery learning had improvement in speaking score differently. The result of post-test class the experimental class got significant higher score than control class with difference score was 7. From the calculation of independent sample t-test in post-test, the result showed that the value of ttest > ttable (4,772 > 2,000). Because the value of t-test > t-table indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Based on the findings and the discussion of the research, the researcher got a conclusion that story completion was effective to improve students’ speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMK N 3 Jepara in the academic year of 2020/2021
