Abstract

This research is about discourse analysis of cohesive devices in students' writing recount texts (study of class X student Ma Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan for the 2020/2021 academic year). The purpose of this study was to find out what types of cohesive devices were used in writing recount texts for class X-IPS MA Miftahul Huda Raguklampitan students in the 2020/2021 academic year and identify the most dominant types of cohesive devices used. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method in which there is a cohesive device in the students' written recount text. The data were analyzed using the theory of Halliday & Hasan in his book entitled Cohesion in English (1976). The results of this study indicate that there are 4 types of cohesion devices, which include reference 494 (63%), substitution 24 (3.10), conjunction 255 (32%) and lexical cohesion 12 (1.50%). In conclusion, the most dominant type of cohesion device is reference (63%). Therefore, the cohesion ellipsis can be taught more to students and other types of cohesion.
