Abstract

This study discusses the effectiveness of social media through Instagram as a medium to improve the ability to write descriptive texts for class X students of SMK N 1 BANGSRI for the academic year 2020/2021. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using social media through Instagram to improve the skills of writing descriptive texts for class X SMK N 1 Bangsri students.
This research is included in Experimental Research. To collect data the researchers used tests and interviews as instruments. Data were collected through a writing test. The experiment was conducted through pre-test and post-test. Researchers used two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. In the control class the researchers used conventional techniques, while in the experimental class the researchers used social media via Instagram. The population of this research is the students of class X SMK N 1 Bangsri. The number of students in class X SMK N 1 BANGSRI is 385 students. Researchers only took 70 students.
The average score of the control class is 77.28, and has a sufficient category in writing skills. While the average value of the experimental class is 82.28, and has a category in writing skills. The result of the t-test calculation is sig.(value)= 3.081 >= 0.05. From the results above, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in achievement between students who are taught using social media via Instagram and students who are taught without social media via Instagram. So, it can be concluded that the use of social media through Instagram as an effective medium to improve students' writing skills in descriptive texts.
