Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of picture strip story in learning speaking skills. The treatment was carried out on 15 July – 15 August 2021 at SMA N 1 Welahan. This method uses experimental research. This experimental research involves experiments class and control class. The population in this study were 72 first grade students of SMA N 1 Welahan, each class consisting of 36 students. The research sample was XMIPA 5 class as the experimental group class and XMIPA 3 class as the control class. Data collection: pre-test and post-test. The test is speaking in English with the theme 'Daily Activity'. Statistical the calculation for the experimental group class gives an average pre-test value of 70.72 and the average post-test was 76.03. While the average value of the pre-test is 60.25 and the average post-test score of 54.75 in the control class. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using the t test. Based on the calculation, the results of the t-test were 12.44 and the t-table was 2.024. It means t-test the result is higher than t-table. It can be concluded that picture strip story are effective in teaching speaking skill for the first grade of SMA N 1 Welahan. Based on these results are it is recommended that teachers pay attention to students on how to learn English well. He it is also important to apply especially picture stories in terms of motivating students to learn to speak English.
