Abstract

This research is about the use of cohesion and coherence in students' narrative texts. The aims of this study were 1) to identify the types of cohesion devices used by class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel Kedung Jepara students in writing narrative texts. 2) To identify the type of coherence device used by class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel Kedung Jepara students in writing narrative texts. 3) To identify the most dominant cohesion and coherence used by class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel Kedung Jepara in writing narrative texts. This research is a qualitative research. The subjects of this study were students of class XI.1 and XI.3 MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel Kedung Jepara for the academic year 2020/2021. The total number of subjects is 62 students. Data collection techniques in this study using documentation, namely students write narrative texts. The data were analyzed by Mayring theory (2014) which consists of categorization, abstraction, coding and results. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that 1) The cohesion used by class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel students is grammatical cohesion which includes references (personal and demonstrative), ellipsis (nominal and verbal) and conjunctions (additional, adversative). and temporal).2) Coherence devices used by class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel students include repetition of key nouns and transition signals. 3) The most dominant cohesive device found in this study is the reference. Meanwhile, the most dominant coherence found in this study is the repeat key noun. The conclusion is that class XI MA Matholi'ul Huda Bugel Kedung Jepara for the 2020/2021 academic year use cohesion and coherence in writing.
