Abstract

Reading is an activity and a process to to connect with the information as a knowledge. Students need reading to process the information and understand the reading purpose in learning especially in reading text. Most of student still get difficulties in understand the meaning of text and believes that reading is a difficult activitiy. Therefore, students have a low reading habit and hard to pass the test. Directed Reading Thinking Activity is a strategy that believed to build students understanding in a text and to improve their reading comprehension. The objective of this research is to examine the effectiveness Directed Reading Thinking Activity in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension and Reading Habit of Descriptive Text at Seventh Grade of MTs Mambaul Ulum Pakis Aji in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. In this research the researcher used true experimental research in which there were three parts during the research. The first was pre-test to both of class between control class and experiment class. After doing the pre-test, then researcher gave treatments. The last part was post-test. The finding of this research that is DRTA has significant effect to improve students’ reading comprehension and reading habit. Based on the research result, the highest post-test of experimental class score is 90 while the lowest post-test score is 23. Besides, in the control class, the highest score is 90 while the lowest post-test score is 36. In addition, in the experimental class, the average score is 61,8 and the median is 58,5. On other hand, in the control class is 72,5 and the median is 76. In addition, the highest post-test score of questionnaires from experiment class is 59 and the lowest score is 33. Meanwhile the post-test score of control class is 54 and the lowest score is 39. In questionnaire the average score of experiment class is 49,3 and the median is 50. On other hand the average score of control class is 46,2 and the median is 47. From the result of multivariate test of post-test score, Fobserved (7.083) > Ftable (3,33) and Fobserved (7.949) > Ftable (3,33). It means that the result significant difference between experimental class and control class in the post-test score. Finally, this research finding can be useful as basic information and reference for further researchers or to who are interested in conducting similar studies.
