Abstract

This research was about the effectiveness of storytelling through pictures to improve students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 Keling in academic year of 2019/2020. The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of the use storytelling through pictures to improve students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 keling. This research was a quasi-experimental research by using nonequivalent control group design. The population of this research were the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Keling which consisted of 252 students. The sample of the research was VIII C as experimental group and VIII A as control group, that every group consisted of 32 students. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique. There were two variables in this research, they were Storytelling through Pictures as the independent variable and students’ speaking skills as the dependent variable. The instrument of this research was oral test. The result of the test’s data indicated that there was a significant difference between both classes, the mean score of pre-test in experimental group was 71,25 and the mean score of pre-test in control group was 73,75. Meanwhile, the mean post-test score in experimental group was 78,38 and the mean post-test score in control group was 74,125. It meant that storytelling through pictures was successful in developing students’ speaking skill. From the calculation of independent sample t-test in post-test, the result showed that the value of ttest > ttable (2,773 > 2,000). Because the value of t-test > t-table indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Based on the findings and the discussion of the research, the researcher got a conclusion that storytelling through pictures was effective to improve students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 Keling in the academic year of 2019/2020.
