The objectives of this research were to know how the teacher assesses the students in assessing English language skill and to know types of assessment used by teachers in assessing the students of English language skill at SMPN 01 Kedung. This research was guided by a qualitative research design as this study attempted to describe the assessment techniques used by a teacher in assessing students’ language skills. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive method in which it focused on describing the assessment technique that used by the teacher, describing the teacher's reason for implementing the techniques as well as the students’ response toward the implementation of the techniques at grades of SMP N 01 Kedung. The study was designed in form of qualitative descriptive study. The data were collected by interviewing, giving questionnaire to the students and documentation. The data analysis indicated: (1) assessment technique used by teachers in assessing the students’ language skills, (2) type of assessment used by teachers in assessing the students’ language skills. The result showed that teachers assess the students by giving the assignment in every material which had been explained by teachers. The second result showed that the teachers used four English language skills such as writing, speaking, reading and listening and for the type of assessment the teachers used assessment for learning in which assessing the students after having a course in order to know the students’ understanding about the material. In addition, the students used google form, google classroom, and whatsApp group in conducting assessment to the students at SMPN 01 Kedung.
