Abstract

This study aims to determine what strategies are used by English teachers in teaching reading at SMA Negeri 1 Kembang. The researcher examined three English teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Kembang. In this study, researcher used three classes from each level taken randomly, which class was class X (Bahasa, IPA 2, IPS 1), XI (Bahasa, IPA 4, IPS 3) and XII (Bahasa, IPA 4, IPS 3). This research was conducted in October 2019. This study used qualitative research methods. Data collection was carried out using interview guidelines, observation checklists, and questionnaires. From the results of the study found that the English teacher who teaches in tenth grade uses two strategies namely skimming and scanning. Then, the eleventh grade the teacher uses two strategies namely DRA (Directed Reading Actively) and QAR (Question Answer Relationship). Whereas for teacher who teach in twelfth class use two strategies namely SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite, and review) and QAR (Question Answer Relationship). From the calculation results of the questionnaire table, it can be concluded that all the strategies used by English teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Kembang were successful.
