Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of Crosswod Puzzle in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery of the seventh graders of SMP N 1 Batealit Jepara.
In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach in the form quasi experimental design. The populations of this research are the seventh graders of SMP N 1 Batealit Jepara and the samples of this research were two classes that divided into experimental class and control class. The experimental class was students which were taught by Crossword Puzzle while the control class was students which were not taught Crossword Puzzle. The total numbers of the samples were 60 students. The sample was used purposive sampling where is not randomly selected.
The data were obtained by tests which were divided into pre-test and post-test. This research consisted of four meetings with two treatments. Which is two meetings for experimental class that given the treatments and two meetings for control class.
The result of this research showed that the means score in experimental class (pre-test was 59,6 and post-test was 74,5). Then the mean score in control class (pre-test was 61,6 and post-test was 67). Besides that, the score of tobserve was 3,777 while the score of ttable was 2,000. It shows that tobserve > ttable = 3,777 > 2,000 in the degree significance 5%. It means that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it can be conclude that Crossword Puzzle is effective in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery.
