Abstract

The objective of the research is to examine the effectiveness of semantic mapping strategy to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students of MTs N 1 Jepara. The researcher found that the students had limited vocabulary. Because of the reason the researcher used a quasi experimental research using pre-test, treatment and post-test to the control and experimental group to achieve the objective of the study. The population of this study was eighth grade students of MTs N 1 Jepara. The sample of this study was class VIII-B and VIII-C. The numbers of the students were 30 students both of them. The instrument that used by the writer was multiple choice test. There are three parts during the experiment. Before the experiment was conducted, the students were given a pre-test then they were given treatment, at the end they were given a post-test and SPSS was chosen to analyze the data. The result of this study was compared and proved that there were any significant results between before and after given treatment in experimental and control group. The result showed that the post-test scores were better than the pre-test scores. The average of experimental group was 67.33 (pre-test) and 80.66 (post-test) and the average for control group was 65.86 (pre-test) and 70.13 (post-test). Moreover, the result of t-test the experimental group was 7.04 and the researcher used the degree significance of 5% and 1%. It can be seen that on df 58 in significance 5% the value of degree was 2.00. It can be concluded that t-observe > t-table (7.04 > 2.00). While the result of t-test from the control group was not significant because 0.733 with df 58 in significance 5% the value of degree was 2.00, so the t-observe < t-table (0.733 < 2.00). The final conclusion was that there was significant difference between students who were taught by Semantic Mapping Strategy and the other students who were taught without Semantic Mapping Strategy. So that Semantic Mapping Strategy was effective strategy in teaching vocabulary.
