Abstract

This thesis is about the effectiveness of pair work technique in improving students’ speaking skill on descriptive text. It is aimed to find out how significant is the difference in students’ achievement of speaking skill on descriptive text who taught by using pair work technique and those who taught without pair work technique. Pair work technique is a technique that requires students to complete task or work in pair. This study was quasi experimental research with non equivalent control group design. The population was tenth grade students of MA Walisongo Pecangaan. The sample of the study was 24 students of X MIA 1 who were chosen as Experimental Class and 22 students of X MIA 2 who were chosen as Control Class. This study used quantitative data which was obtained from pre test and post test. Data collection was done from 5th of January 2019 until 26th of January 2019. The data collection was started with pre test. Both experimental class and control class was given pre test which was in the form of oral test. Students were asked to describe two pictures. Then, students were given treatments which were divided into 4 meetings. The experimental class was taught by using pair work technique, meanwhile the control class was taught without using pair work technique. After the treatments, students of both experimental and control class were given post test to know the students’ improvement. The data was analyzed by using t-test. The t-test calculation showed that tvalue was 2,391 and then ttable from degree of freedom 44 was 2,021. So, tvalue was higher than ttable (2,391 > 2,021). The calculation had already proved by SPSS. The result meant that Ho was refused and Ha was accepted. So, it could be concluded that pair work is effective to improve students’ speaking skill on descriptive text at tenth grade students of MA Walisongo Pecangaan Jepara in the academic year of 2018/2019. Pair work technique also can be used by English teacher as a variety among the other technique because this technique requires students to be more active in completing their task.
