Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries using English as a foreign language. As a foreign language, learning English is not as easy as learning Indonesian language, because it has different structure, pronunciation, sounds and others. However, all languages have the same four skills to master. Speaking, writing, listening and reading become the basic components in mastering language communication. Writing is one of important skill that need to master in everyday life communication. Writing is a skill in which we express ideas, feeling and thought which is to be arranged in words, sentences and paragraph. Motivation is very important in study learning process. Without motivation, someone will have no willpower to do something. After the researcher conduct an interview with English teacher in SMK Negeri 3 Jepara, the teacher explains that the difficulties of students feel hard to write is because they have low writing ability and have low motivation in writing and seldom build their confidence in writing it. To conduct the research, the researcher uses a correlational method of ex post facto designs). The main purpose of ex post facto research is to find some the cause or problem that can change the attitude of someone, symptom, or phenomenon which is caused by some events. The objectives of this research are to know the correlation between student’s motivation in learning writing and their writing ability at Tenth grade students of SMKN 03 Jepara. Total population students in SMK Negeri 3 Jepara from class 10,11 and 12 is 1379 students and the sample of this research consist of 36 male students of TKJ 02 course. The instruments used in this research are student’s motivation questionnaire and writing test. The researcher used questionnaire to know the level of students writing motivation and writing test to know the level of students writing ability. To analyze the data, the researcher used Pearson product moment correlation coefficient formula in SPSS program. The result of data analysis is rcount = 0.228 lower than rtable = 0.334. The result is considered weak in the interpretation of the data. Based on the result of analysis of data above, it can be concluded that null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. In conclusion, there is a negative correlation between students’ motivation in learning writing and their writing ability.
