Abstract

This study discusses the effectiveness of critical debate to improve speaking and critical thinking skills of class XI MA Darul Falah Sirahan Pati students for the 2021/2022 academic year. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of using the critical debate method to improve the speaking and critical thinking skills of students in the eleventh grade of MA Darul Falah Sirahan Pati in the 2021/2022 academic year. This research is a Quasi Experimental research. The sample of this study was class XI.1 as the experimental class and class XI.2 as the control class. The instrument of this research is an oral test. The results showed that students in the experimental research class who were taught by critical debate and students in the control class who were taught using discovery learning had different increase in speaking scores. This can be seen by the scores of both classes on the pre-test and post-test where the experimental class got a score of 71.44-82 while the control class got a score of 73.88-75.67 as speaking skills. In addition, the critical thinking scores for the pre-test and post-test were 63.89-82.64 as the experimental class and 63.19-78.47 as the control class. The post-test results for the experimental class scored significantly higher than the control class. Based on MANOVA data analysis shows that the significance value of students' speaking skills is 0.000 where the significance value is less than (0.05) while the significance value of students' critical thinking skills is 0.029 where the significance value is higher than (0.05). So, the hypothesis shows that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. In conclusion, there is a significant effect on students' speaking and critical thinking skills after being taught using the critical debate method. In other words, the critical debate method can improve the speaking and critical thinking skills of class XI MA Darul Falah Siraha Pati students for the 2021/2022 academic year.
