Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find the grammatical errors in writing recount text made by the eighth grade students of SMP Islam Raudhlatut Thalibin Jambusari, to describe the source of error in writing recount text made by the eighth grade students of SMP Islam Raudhlatut Thalibin Jambusari, to know the percentages of errors made by eighth grade students of Raudhlatut Thalibin Jambusari. This research is a qualitative research where the result is described into words rather than numbers. The subject of this research is VIII students of Raudhlatut Thalibin Jambusari in the academic year of 2020/2021. The instruments used in this research are the researcher himself, test and documentation. The test is done by giving three different topics for the students and the students only need to choose one of them to be composed into a recount text. The result of the test is only to be analyzed by the researcher and not to be given score. The documentation is in the form of students’ product of recount text. In doing the data analysis, there are five procedure of error analysis done by the researcher. Those are collecting a sample of learner language where the students are asked to make a recount text, identification of error where the researcher identifies the error occurred in students’ writing of recount text, description of error where the researcher describes the error occurred by classifying them into types of error based on Betty S. Azzar’s theory, explanation of error where the researcher explains the error occurred by classifying them into sources of error by Brown, and error evaluation where the researcher makes recapitulation of the errors occurred and calculates the percentage. After doing all the procedures of the research, the result obtained is that the students made some errors which include all the types of error by Betty S. Azzar . The result is presented in percentage. The most dominant error is verb tense error with 31,74%. It is followed by add a word with 18,38%. Punctuation error with 10,02%, word choice error with 9,79%, word form with 5,97%, capitalization error with 5,49%, omit a word with 5,01%, word order error with 3,82%, singular-plural error with 3,82%, spelling error with 2,63%, article error with 1,43%, incomplete sentence error with 0,95%, meaning not clear error with 0,72% and the last error is run on sentence error with 0,24%. The sources of the errors found according to J. C. Richard theory are mostly intralingual error with 65,57% and followed by interlingual error with 34,45%.
