This research is aimed at identifying the types of deixis and finding its referrent for each deixis in The Red Shoes short story written by Hans Christian Andersen. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data because the data was in the form of words, pharase, sentences and utterances. The data were analyzed through some stages; reading the story from beginning to the end, selecting sentences and identifying deixis, coding and categorizing the deixis, and explaining the data based on research problems. The result of research showed that the total of deixis found in the short story was 187. The mostly type of deixis obtained was person deixis with 163 words. These also could be classified again into 12 (6%) for first person deixis, 6 (3%) for second person deixis, and 145 (78%) words for third person deixis. The second type of deixis that was obtained in the data is spatial deixis, there were 13 (7%) words. Meanwhile, the temporal deixis were 11 (6%) words found from the data. Moreover, the writer also found the dominant pronoun is deixis. The pronoun often appeared in the story was ‘she’, there are 66 words. Whereas the dominant spatial deixis that was often used in this story is ‘there’ with frequency of 11 words and the last dominant one was temporal deixis which often appeared was ‘now’ with frequency of 8 words. The researcher also analyzed referrent meaning based on each deixis. Based on the data, person deixis referred to a little girl, an old lady, Karen, old mother shoes maker, poor girl, queen, Vicar’s wife, angel, executioner, old soldier, child, princess. Meanwhile, spatial deixis had referent meaning with carriage, ceiling, church, cornfield, darkforest, grave yard, inside a house, cabinets, narrow room, vicarage, small house, and a room. Lastly, temporal deixis in the story referred to the time such as afternoon, morning, present time, sunday and night.
